If I had to describe in short how Mexico went it would be enough if I said that I'm really gutted. Only the beginning was rally and the rest was then siesta.

Maybe the readers feel like we would go through the same thing over and over again but let's say it again. We knew before the season that this wasn't going to be easy. We learn from mistakes. And we have learned - I can guarantee that.

The first rally on gravel wasn't too hot for Kaitsu and me. We had a big roll in the mountain range. The best before that was that we already got some promising times just before that mistake.

I just lost traction when braking. There was some lump beside the dusty road and from that the car flipped around. It was quite a banging when we rolled six times through the roof in a whole body spin to the bottom of the hill.

Mostly I was gutted for not being able to continue on Saturday. The regulations say that you can't continue if there's even the slightest crack in the safety cage.

Now we lost two important driving days. Every rally more with this car wouldn't hurt me at least. At least in Mexico our car felt really good. My team mate even got to the podium with the car.

Never mind. The opening day was tricky enough without the ending. I hit a rock in the beginning and we had to give half an hour of leverage to others once again when there were some probs with the fuel supply and we couldn't find the problem anywhere at first.

But it's like this. It's part of rally's nature. We will go forward with humility. Learn all the time and there will come a race where we don't have to compose anything extra on the road.

The car is now being built for Jordan at the workshop. Now I have some resting in my schedule. After that we will drive one test and go to Jordan.

I'm going as an apprentice there too because these other guys have rallied there before. For me and Kaitsu everything is completely new.

But the passion to learn is just as 10 as it was before the first rally.

In Mexico we went quite nicely forward in notes too. It's coming.

Kimi Raikkonen, former Formula One world champion, is now driving for the French automobile company Citroen in the World Rally Championship. The Finn told DNA in an interview on email that he is enjoying the challenge of being a rally driver. Excerpts:

What will it take to succeed in rallying?
KR: Time and experience. There is a lot to get used to, especially things like making the pace notes.

Have you made any adjustment to your driving style and approach towards racing to suit the needs of WRC?
KR: Yes, of course; you have to change everything as rallying is completely different to circuit racing. It is a whole new driving style with nothing in common with Formula 1 - apart from maybe a steering wheel.

What will be your objective for the 2010 WRC season?
KR: I don’t have any particular objectives; I just want to do my best and learn a bit more about the rally world in order to be competitive.

What will it be like to race against WRC legends like Sebastian Loeb?
KR: I think it will be a lot of fun. But throughout my career, I’ve been used to competing against top drivers, so this is just part of motorsport for me. You always want to be measured against the best people.

What was your reason for quitting Formula One and joining WRC?
KR: I had some possibilities to carry on in Formula 1, but I decided to go rallying as it has always been something that has interested me, right from when I was a kid.

Will you come back to Formula One, or you are done with it?
KR: I’m not sure what my plans for the future will be yet. I’m still at the stage of my first world championship rally this year, so I need time to get used to this environment and decide what I want to do. It’s too early to think about that yet. For now I just want to concentrate on my current challenge. Then later in the year I will think about the future.

What’s the secret behind Finland producing so many great drivers, be it in Formula One or the WRC?
KR: I don’t really know, maybe it’s because we are used to driving on gravel roads or snow and ice from a young age. But to tell you the truth, I don’t know; for me it is something that comes quite naturally.

Are you satisfied with what you have achieved in Formula One? Do you wish you had won more titles?
KR: As a driver you are never really happy as you always want to achieve more, but I am satisfied that I did my best and did a good job.

What is your view on Michael Schumacher’s return to Formula One?
KR: Obviously it is something he wanted to do and good luck to him. But it is nothing to do with me, I am concentrating on my own challenges this year.

Kimi Raikkonen has shrugged off his Rally Mexico accident as an inevitable part of his transition from Formula 1 to the World Rally Championship.

The former Ferrari F1 driver had to retire from the Mexican WRC round yesterday when he rolled his Citroen Junior C4 several times near the end of SS7. He had previously fallen down the order due to a loose connection in the car's fuel system forcing him to stop for half an hour on SS2.

"It was very unlucky: the car just slid wide at the end of the stage in a slippery braking area, so we clipped the side of the road and rolled a few times," Raikkonen explained.

"I had hoped for some good things from this rally, but it was only my seventh event and I am still learning. It's normal that when you are learning anything you can get caught out by something unexpected and this is what happened to me today."

The Finn was pleased with his pace prior to the accident, having been seventh quickest on SS4 and fifth on the asphalt Coca Cola Street stage.

"My biggest disappointment is that we're not able to continue, as I wanted to have as much time in the car as I could," he said. "I had a really good feeling earlier and I wanted to push to see what we could do. I'm sure we will come back stronger at our next event."

His co-driver Kaj Lindstrom agreed that Raikkonen had made good progress, and played down the accident.

"It was a shame that we ended our rally how we did as Kimi was making excellent progress, both with the driving and the pace notes," said Lindstrom.

"When we went off we were in a braking area for a left and then a right hand corner with lots of dust and sand. Kimi had been driving perfectly to the notes and it's the sort of thing that could happen to anyone.

"Up until then things had been going really well, and I'm confident that we'll be on track again at our next event. It's all part of the game."

Citroen Junior boss Benoit Nogier also felt that Raikkonen had shown promise between his misfortunes.

"Kimi lost time this morning with a technical problem that was not at all his fault. Afterwards, he set some impressive times," Nogier said. "He decided to up the pace on SS7, a stage where he felt comfortable. Unfortunately, he went off shortly before the stage finish."

This is my first trip to Mexico, this is my first rally in this continent and this is my first rally on gravel with this Red Bull Citroen WRC car. Obviously, it’s several new things for me on the same trip.

This is my seventh rally with my co-driver Kaj Lindstrom. Like always, we came here with a very positive feeling. It’s going to be very interesting to see, how the car works out there and how much grip there is this time after two rallies on such a different surface.

When you look the sceneries behind the windshield, you see a barren mountain range, slunted trees, dry and dust. The weather is very warm and we are something like 2000 metres over sea level. Well, it’s going to be a pretty sweaty rally. No doubt about it.

I’ve been seeing all the time, the importance of getting the pace notes right. Now it’s going to be even more decisive. I noticed how much effort you have to put in while making the notes. Now it feels a bit easier, but, for sure, it’s never going to be the easiest job of the world.

We didn’t test after the Swedish Rally, but now we have done the pace notes here in Leone area. My aim is exactly the same we had in Sweden - to finish the rally without too much extra program on the road.

Every single mile means more experience for me and more feel for me. While we do every stage twice, it helps a little bit. But here, obviously, the roads will be wearing and the surface will be changing all the time. So you never know how it is, while you attack on the stage.

I’ve been racing only once before on gravel. It was the Finnish Rally last year with my own car. Gravel is the surface that everybody associates with rally. And for me it’s a complete contrast to anything that I experienced in Formula 1 racing.

Sliding with a Formula 1 car meant you did something wrong. Here it’s like it should be in a rally. We learned a lot in Sweden and this will certainly help us in Mexico, but effectively we are starting all over again from the beginning now, as this rally has nothing in common with Sweden.

My approach is going to be exactly the same though: we want to build up our speed at a comfortable pace and above all get to the finish.

I’m hoping that Mexico will be a little easier for us, but with gravel being the most common surface on the World Rally Championship it’s important for us to learn as much as possible.

We managed to get quicker the last time we were out and this will be the aim for us again in Mexico.

As 2007 Formula One world champion Kimi Raikkonen prepares to make his WRC debut for the Citroen Junior Team, we stop him in the Service Park for a quick chat.

What are your expectations for the Rally Sweden and the WRC season as a whole?
KR: "For Sweden my aim is to get to the end of the rally and to learn the car more. What I need is just more time in the car. For the rest of the season I want to make progress and fight with the others but I have no special target in mind; we will see how it goes."

With limited time to recce and make pace notes, how helpful is it having the experience of Kaj Lindstrom and the Citroen team behind you?
KR: "For sure it's helpful to have other peoples' experience. But in the end while they can help you with certain things they cannot tell you how to drive the car; this is something that you have to learn yourself."

Have you spoken to Rami and other rally drivers about your move and what's been the best piece of advice you've had?
KR: "It's a little bit the same story. Of course I talk with my brother and my friends about motorsport but in the end this is just talk; driving the car is something you have to do yourself."

You are the Ice Man, but have you found a rallying surface you prefer?
KR: "Not yet, as I haven't tried everything yet. Maybe asphalt could be more familiar for me but we will see when we get there."

How does the atmosphere in the Service Park compare with the atmosphere in the F1 Paddock? (Is it more informal, less glamorous, is the food better?)
KR: "It's very different to F1, that's for certain. From what I have seen so far I like the rally atmosphere. But it's only my first rally; I need time to get to know the whole scene better."

Ruts, spins - and banks

From: rallybuzz.com

Autosport Interview - "It's more open here than Formula 1"

He saved his best answer for when I asked whether he was concerned about being forgotten by F1. “I don’t really stress much about those things.”
